About Beautiful Area of Grimaud and Port Grimaud
Located on the French Riviera near Saint-Tropez are Port Grimaud and Grimaud, two villages that share a name but have vastly different settings. Port Grimaud, in Saint-Tropez’s bay, is referred to as Little Venice because of its resemblance to that part of Italy, which you’ll learn was no accident. In contrast, Grimaud is a medieval town with a traditional layout, sprawling properties and its own charms.
In Port Grimaud, pretty canals crisscross through the town, with property located throughout the town’s different islands, which are connected by picturesque bridges. The canals and rivers are dotted with shops, restaurants and characterful property. Visitors to Port Grimaud will also notice that there aren’t many (or any) cars, adding to the leisurely atmosphere.
The entire town was carefully planned by architect Francois Spoerry and built in the 1960s. Though Port Grimaud is based on Venice and designed to look like it, its architecture is purposefully Provencal. Overall, the town is interesting and attractive, with adorable boutiques, great restaurants and a structure you won’t find anywhere else (except Venice, of course). At the heart of the town is a church that was also designed by Spoerry. This is where the architect now rests, and it offers the best views of the town. Don’t leave without looking at the church’s stained glass – it’s designed to depict that gorgeous view.
Homes in Port Grimaud have just as much character as the unique town itself, and most exteriors are a subtle shade of pink, orange or another muted neutral or pastel colour. Houses here also have traditional terracotta roofs with wrought iron on the front of the home. Practically every home in Port Grimaud is well-maintained to preserve the beauty of the town, and that’s true whether the house you fall in love with was designed in the 1960s or more recently.
The medieval village of Grimaud is quite different from Port Grimaud and is accessible from Port Grimaud by either waterway or train. Its castle, the focal point of the village, has lovely views of the Mediterranean. If you’re interested in a vineyard property, you’re in luck. There are chateaux and estates in Grimaud that are set on several hectares of land, complete with vines, wineries and wine cellars, and possibly even olive yards. Common features of these homes include multiple bedrooms, lifts, independent guest houses and apartments, pools and pool houses, and even stables for horses.
Grimaud and Port Grimaud also boast extra-private homes hidden from sight, some with private beach access. There are modern villas that are located by the water, offering access to popular towns while still being secluded. Your new home can be large and light-filled, with a chef-caliber kitchen, outdoor terraces and a private garden.
As you would expect from a location that’s so close to several bodies of water, there are plenty of available outdoor activities. Go boating or yachting, dine by the waterside, or spend the day at the beach. Property for sale in Port Grimaud is especially popular with boating and yachting enthusiasts thanks to how accessible it is. There’s also a market in Port Grimaud that’s held three times each week, where you can buy fresh produce and culinary essentials. And if you’re new in town, this is where to meet fresh faces.
