To get to this little gem of an area hidden away at the top of the Tarantaise (Isere), you will drive past the valley base of Bourg St Maurice, and the village of Seez, where the road starts to gradually climb and wind for around 20 minutes, until your ears start to pop and you reach the beautiful village of St Foy, considered the half way stop, and the resort of St Foy 10 minutes above – recently given the place of number 1 resort in the world by The Sunday Times. St Foy is relatively tiny, with only 15 pistes, and not linked to the mega-resort range of Val d’Isere and Tignes, but if off piste is your thing, then you’ll still be finding freshies way after Val and Tignes have dried up – thanks to the family orientation of the resort, the layout of the pistes, and the Foglietta mountain just above (one of the longest off-piste runs in the region).
St Foy is 10 minutes from Villaroger, linking it to Paradiski (420km of pistes), and only 20 minutes by car from the Espace Killy (Val d’Isere and Tignes – 300km pistes), and Rosiere (the destination for heliskiers, on the border with Italy) and at a fraction of the price, with absolutely no concrete in sight, it is one of the most beautiful Alpine setting around, giving it some of the most affordable luxury chalets in the Alps.
Further up the valley, you’ll pass by the impressive Tignes damn, built in the 60’s at the same time as the resort of Tignes, and the Lac de Chevril, then through the tunnels and ‘paravalanches” and into Val D’Isere (daarling!) – without doubt, along with St Foy, Courchevel and Meribel, one of the most beautiful resort towns in the Savoie. With countless fine restaurants and boutiques, Val definitely caters to the “in crowd”. The resort is linked to Tignes, and so the high altitude skiing and investment potential are definitely there – although prices are higher. Going past Val you’ll find yourself in Fornet – the most exclusive area in the surroundings, with some of the most prestigious, recently built luxury chalets in the world.
If you’d taken a right over the damn, you’d have passed through the recently redeveloped Tignes les Boisses and seen the picturesque Tignes les Brevieres is in the shadows below – considerably cheaper than the rest of the area, but if ever the old damn were to be dismantled? (it was only built to last 50 years) …The road continues up past the tree line until you arrive in the main resort of Tignes le Lac and Val Claret – at the base of the Grande Motte Glacier, where summer skiing is still possible (although not for many years more). The resort is the second highest in Europe (with the highest gold course), and therefore one of the most snow sure – making it one of the best investment areas in the Alps. Unfortunately there are relatively few high quality chalets and apartments available (lots of concrete and no trees up here!), and finding them isn’t easy.
