Languedoc's name was derived from the name of the traditional language of southern France, Occitan.  Specifically, the name is derived from the phrase 'langue d'oc', where the Latin word 'hoc' means 'yes'.  From the 13th century the name applied to the entire area in which the Languedoc, or Occitan, language was spoken. The Occitan Language is a Romance language which continues to be spoken around Nîmes and Uzès, in the Haute-Loire and Ardèche by more than 1,500,00 people.

Languedoc Roussillon benefits from an exceptional Mediterranean climate. The coastal plains are typically Mediterranean, rarely freezing in winter, and enjoying average high summer temperatures of nearly 30 C (86F). It is during the summer months that Languedoc Roussillon really comes alive with local Mairies organising numerous cultural activities and events.  Local festivals range from bull-running, to sea-jousting in the north, to jazz festivals to extreme sports shows, to local fêtes displaying French regional food specialities and Languedoc wines.  

As in Provence, wine has been produced in Languedoc for more than 2000 years.  Four departments of the Languedoc-Rousillon, Gard, Herault, Aude and Pyrenees Orientales share the biggest French vineyards. The diversity of soils makes it possible to produce wines of different types, and the differences are carefully maintained, with a constant eye to quality.

In recent years Languedoc Roussillon has become a popular French holiday destination with long sunny days, Mediterranean beaches, tourist facilities and local wine and food that makes everyone's mouth water.
