| Before you look at buying a Provence property you should learn as much as you can about the area. Provence, so named as it was the first Roman province outside Italy, is situated in the South East of France on the Mediterranean, bordering Italy. Provence is made up of five departments; Var, Valcluse and Bouches-du-Rhone and parts of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes. Each of the areas has its own appeal and you should consider each when looking to buy a Provence property. Val is known for its main port of Toulon and its seaside resorts, the most famous being St Tropez, with 420 kilometres of coastline. The department is in the foothills of the Alps and is mainly mountainous but there is Provence property available to buy in the seaside resorts. Valcluse has a landmass of just over 3,500 kilometres and is made up of mainly mountainous regions. The main town in Velcluse is Avignon, a culturally diverse town which historically has been home to many of the worlds Popes. With a land mass of over 5,000 kilometres Bouches-du-Rhone is the largest department in Provence and the geography is very different in this department. There are a number of large lakes and rivers flowing through the department meaning plenty of Provence property available with views of the water.
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is a highly mountainous region with some peaks as high as 8,000 feet. The mountainous regions are sparsely populated so if a quiet retreat with easy access to the beaches on the Mediterranean is what you are looking for from your Provence property then this could be the department for you.
Finally Alpes-Maritimes is home to the famous coastline of the French Riviera consisting of towns such as Nice and Cannes. The main source of economy here is tourism and a Provence property for rent here might be your best bet. The area is known for its luxury beaches and properties and the world famous Cannes film festival is hosted here so property is expensive. Want a Provence Property?
